2019 SWAG Awards: Esso, Annan, Mumuni to battle for home-based player of the year award

Home-based players Joseph Esso, Felix Annan, and Shafiu Mumuni have been nominated for the Local Footballer of the Year Award by the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG).

The trio has been outstanding for their respective clubs in the year 2019 under review and deservedly makes it to the nomination list.

Hearts of Oak striker Joseph Esso obviously had the best year of his career this year where he took the local scene by storm.

Though the Ghana Premier League had been put on hold, the forward excelled during the Normalization Committee Special Competition where he established himself as the best player for his club and one of the best players for the competition.

In the same competition, Felix Annan was in post for Asante Kotoko and helped them to lift the tier 1 title, beating Hearts of Oak on penalties in the semi-finals.

The goalkeeper was also part of the Porcupine Warriors team that played in the CAF Champions League and the Confederations Cup though it didn’t end well.

In addition to that, Annan was part of the Black Stars team that went to Egypt for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament. Though he could not feature, his involvement in the national team is evidence of how brilliant he has been.

For Ashanti Gold’s Shafiu Mumuni, he exhibited potency in front of goal all year. He was unstoppable in the NC Special Competition and continued his goal-scoring spree when the Miners went into the CAF Confederations Cup.

The forward did not stop there. He went to the 2019 WAFU tournament with the Black Stars B team and ended up winning the golden boot award after finding the back of the net 4 times.

The performance of the three players cannot go unnoticed this year and it is no surprise they are up for the local footballer of the year award at the SWAG Awards which will come on in early 2020 at the Accra International Conference Center.
