Everton's Koeman Trolls Arsenal Boss by Claiming Referees Have Aided His Last Three Wins Over Wenger

Ronald Koeman has laughed off suggestions that Everton had referee Mark Clattenburg to thank for their vital 2-1 victory over Arsenal on Tuesday.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger had complained that the corner, from which Ashley Williams headed home the Blues' winning goal, should have been a goal kick to the away side.

However, Koeman mocked his French counterpart in the aftermath of the massive win for the Toffees, and joked that his last three triumphs over Arsenal had all come about because of the man officiating each of those encounters.

He told BBC Sport: "I'm not surprised because it's the third [home game] in a row I won against Arsenal and three times in a row it was about the referee.

"I'm sorry Arsenal, we won through the referee."

Everton headed into the clash at Goodison Park on the back of just one win in their last 10 Premier League outings, and were rightfully beaten by Watford 3-2 last Saturday ahead of the game against Arsenal.

However, after falling behind to a deflected Alexis Sanchez free kick, the Blues rallied and, backed by a raucous Goodison crowd, came from behind to pick up three points for the first time since the 2-0 victory over West Ham United at the end of October.

Seamus Coleman and Williams both notched headers to hand Koeman's side an all-important triumph ahead of next Monday's Merseyside derby, and the 53-year-old now wants to see his charges use Tuesday's performance as a template to follow for the rest of the campaign.

In an interview with Everton's official site, Koeman said: I hope from now on we realise how strong we can be if we play like this. Of course, it's always possible to lose a game but we need to show that commitment [in every game].

The key was how we played after 20 minutes. That was the team that we like to see, what the fans like to see. The team went face-to-face with the opponent with aggression, pressing and playing good football and going for it.

But if you play how we started the game, you won't win because the team was nervous. On one side I can understand because it's a difficult situation and maybe there was a lack of confidence, but it was really poor in the beginning.

We had a fantastic atmosphere and fantastic support from our fans today. If we show that aggression and that commitment, then it's difficult to beat Everton at Goodison Park.
