Ex-Chelsea striker Cascarino backs English team to win Champions League

Tony Cascarino believes that a Premier League team is poised to win the Champions League this season.

It has been five years since an English side won the competition, but there is optimism after all five sailed through their groups and into the knockout stages.

"I totally see a Premier League team winning the Champions League," Cascarino told talkSPORT.

"I really think that one of them will turn up in the final and will handle themselves brilliantly

"The only team that could achieve a 100 per cent record in the group are Manchester City – if they win tonight they'll have a 100 per cent record in the group stages."

Unfortunately, City were not able to maintain a 100 percent record, after suffering a 2-1 defeat away to Shakhtar Donetsk. But the club's performance in the other games leaves City fans feeling very optimistic about reaching the latter stages of the competition.

"A lot of it is about how they're playing today but by the time we get to February, can they show the same level of consistency?," said Cascarino

"All of them have nearly won their groups. Liverpool can win their group tonight, which I expect them to do, that is a fantastic achievement."

Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham topped their respective groups, with Spurs going unbeaten in a group featuring champions Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund. Chelsea finished second, tied on 11 points with Roma.
