FA Clear Wayne Rooney of Any Wrongdoing as Media Storm Over Behaviour on England Duty Continues

Published on: 25 November 2016

Wayne Rooney will not face disciplinary action over his conduct while on England duty after the Football Association cleared him of any wrongdoing.

The Manchester United captain has been the subject of intense scrutiny over allegedly gatecrashing a wedding reception during the November international break but, after carrying out an internal investigation, the FA are satisfied that Rooney should face no punishment.

TheDaily Mirror claims that the FA are happy with Rooney's explanation of events surrounding the issue that has created such a media storm, and do not believe that he purposefully wreaked havoc at the wedding party at the Grove Hotel in Hertfordshire two weeks ago.

The governing body is also accepting of the fact that interim England manager Gareth Southgate did not enforce a curfew on England's stars, with the senior squad given time off after the 3-0 victory over Scotland - between noon Saturday and 11am Sunday - to relax and enjoy a night off.

As well as Rooney, up to 12 other Three Lions stars chose to venture off on nights out in their downtime and, as a result, the 31-year-old will not be individually charged, will retain the England captaincy and be available for selection for the next batch of international fixtures.

Images had surfaced online of Rooney looking worse for wear at the wedding on the night of Saturday November 12.

Accusations had been levelled at the ex-Everton star over his apparent gatecrashing of the reception, drinking too much alcohol, stumbling around the venue and staying up until 5am the following morning.

Despite apologising to interim England boss Gareth Southgate for his behaviour, Rooney maintained that he had been invited to the wedding by guests and was always willing to pose for photographs and sign autographs for those who wanted them.

The forward later released a public statement lambasting the press for "writing my obituary" and called the amount of abuse he had received over the story "a disgrace", with many in the footballing world - including Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and Manchester United legend Gary Neville - leaping to his defence.

Rooney continued to fire barbs at the media in the wake of United's 4-0 win over Feyenoord on Thursday, and told BT Sport that he was still unhappy with the treatment he had received from the press.

He said: I actually didn't even step foot into the wedding and I think it's a shame that I'm having to talk about it now after such a great victory.

After starring against the Dutch outfit at Old Trafford, Rooney is in contention to feature from the off against West Ham United on Saturday.
