FONSECA: YOUNGSTERS DID WELL BUT WE MADE MISTAKES

Published on: 11 December 2020

The Giallorossi - already through to the knockout stage, of course - went down to a 3-1 defeat in Bulgaria, despite Tommaso Milanese scoring his first professional goal.

Here's what Paulo Fonseca had to say following the contest.

Are you annoyed with the defensive mistakes made tonight?

“It’s true that we lost and there are a lot of elements I didn’t like, but before the game we were faced with a few different challenges as well. This was a European game and we were up against a solid opponent – and we made two mistakes and conceded two goals.

“But we also created chances, they just defended very well and made it tough for us. We made mistakes that we shouldn’t be making.”

Are you happy with the efforts of some of the younger players – especially Tommaso Milanese?

“It wasn’t easy for any of them to come into this game and take responsibility. But they did well. I’m pleased with all those guys.”

What are Roma’s chances in the Europa League in 2021?

“We want to progress as far as we can. Now it all gets much harder. Let’s see who we get in the last-32 of the competition, but all the sides are really good.”

Can you give a fitness update on the squad?

“Lorenzo Pellegrini and Jordan Veretout have been training well. Having Gianluca Mancini back for the Bologna game [on Sunday] will be tough, but I think we will have the others back.”

Why didn’t Pau Lopez start the game tonight? Was there a particular reason?

“We prepared for this match with the idea that Pau Lopez would play. But in training at Trigoria Antonio [Mirante] had a problem, and we don’t know if he’ll be fit for the weekend. So because of that we decided not to risk Pau here. That’s the reason.”
