The day oscillated between the unofficial announcements of withdrawal and the positions to give a last hope to Cameroon. But at the end of an open secret dressed in false suspense, doubts are definitely raised. Formally, the governing body of African football has taken a radical decision: withdraw the CAN2019 in Cameroon and pave the way for a new call for applications. Seven months before the opening date of the major African competition!

The 2019 African Cup of Nations (CAN) will not take place in Cameroon. It is now official since this extraordinary meeting of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) which met this 30 November 2018 in Accra. Between leaks in the media announcing the news even before the end of the meeting and caution of those waiting for an official stamp, the suspense had become untenable and lovers disillusioned.

 No grace period!

Gathering in the Ghanaian capital, the members of the CAF Executive Committee decided unanimously to make an outright withdrawal from the organization of the biggest football competition on the continent that Cameroon was to host during the months from June to July. Already in the daytime, several sources mentioned that the examination of the two CAF inspection reports had led the leaders of continental football to recognize the unpreparedness of Cameroon to host the competition.

A blow to Cameroon's ambitions of organization, justified by the major delays in the delivery of sports and logistics infrastructure. The apex body of African football has therefore not chosen the third way, that of granting Cameroon a grace period. However, its requirements were to deliver the 6 stadiums, 25 training grounds and hotel facilities no later than three months before the competition, ie March 31, 2018.

Since the meeting of Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt, CAF has pointed to delays in completing stadia and other infrastructure . But in the opinion of several experts, CAF had not chosen to withdraw the competition in Cameroon to not do this subject, the main theme of the campaign for the presidential election. Meanwhile, Ahmad Ahmad, the boss of African football had cleverly blown the heat and cold between his vitriolic phrase during a visit to Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso and his meeting with Paul Biya, at the instigation of Samuel Eto'o .

South Africa, Morocco, Algeria, country of substitution

This last meeting suggested that the question of withdrawal from the competition was no longer on the agenda. But, it seems that the risk that the violence of the English-speaking independence issue will not go beyond the competition, has weighed on the choice of CAF authorities. But time is running out just seven months before the opening of the competition.

From now on, the governing body of African football should urgently organize another call for applications, taking into account only those countries that have proven references in terms of organizational and logistical capacity. On the list of alternative countries, sometimes erected by the media, sometimes by connoisseurs of football, South Africa, Morocco or Algeria are candidates for this edition to reassign.

Egypt has denied the information putting it in the race for the organization of the continental competition. A time announced, Ghana, which hosts the women's CAN currently, has not yet made an official statement about its intention to apply for CAN 2019. The list of alternative host countries could be extended for twenty days during which applications are received before the designation in December. The competition looks harsh for less than a month to find another country that can host the first 24-team African Cup. Less than seven months from the official opening of the biggest competition for Africans.
