Former Gunner Wouldn't Put His Money on Arsenal Winning the League

Published on: 29 November 2016

Former Arsenal man Alan Smith spent eight seasons at the North London club between 1987 and 1995 and in that time he won 6 trophies, including twoFirst Division titles.Despite obvious loyalties, he still spoke candidly about the club in its current climate anddoesn't think the Gunners have what ittakes to win this season's Premier League.

Despite sitting just three points off current league leaders Chelsea, Alan Smith doesn't feel their squad is good enough to go the distance.

Speaking to Sky Sports NewsHQ viaThe Sports Review, this is what he had to say:

"I wouldn't have too much money on them winning the league, I really wouldn't.The performance at Old Trafford showed their shortcomings."

The game in questionended 1-1 and it seemed Arsenal had very little to offer against a struggling United side and were perhaps lucky to draw.

The pundit then went on to say he didn't feel this Arsenal side quite had the mental strength to go and win the league: "They have got better, they're winning or drawing some games that they might have lost last year, but I still think they're a distance off having that mental attitude to go on and stamp their authority on the league."

Arsenal have been in terrific form since their 4-3 home loss against Liverpool on the opening day of the season. They have not lost since in any competition,so perhaps it's a bit surprising Alan Smith has completely written them off.

The North London club are still chasing trophies on all fronts; meanwhile, current leaders Chelsea have just the Premier League to focus their attention on. This might well be a defining factor in proceedings.
