Former Prem ref says Crystal Palace should\'ve had a penalty against Spurs

Ex-Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher believes that Crystal Palace should have been awarded a penalty in the clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

Palace suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat against Spurs on Sunday and the result would have left a bitter taste on the mouths of the fans as the Eagles were arguably the better team on the day.

In addition, Palace could have been handed a penalty when Tottenham goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga seemed to obstruct Mamadou Sakho inside the box while coming out to punch the ball and Gallagher has stated that the south London side were hard done by to have not been awarded a spot-kick for the incident.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: "I think the referee is well within his rights to give the penalty. This is a challenge we saw yesterday with Thibaut Courtois and Marcus Rashford on Sunday - the goalkeeper tries to make himself big to block the ball.

"It's not an outfield player - we see a goalkeeper come out and try and block the ball, very much like Peter Schmeichel did. It might be an area of the game we need to work harder on."
