Gareth Barry Claims Reigning Premier League Champions Leicester Are Not the Team They Were Last Year

Published on: 27 December 2016

Everton midfielder Gareth Barry has told football magazineFourFourTwothat Leicester City are not as good as they were this time last year.

Barry and his teammates got the better of the Foxes on Boxing day, as the Toffees claimed a 2-0 victory at the King Power stadium to increase the pressure on Claudio Ranieri's team.

The current Premier League champions are just three points above the relegation zone and have only won four games all season, compared to the 11 victories they had racked up this time last year.

And unsurprisingly Barry, who played just over an hour of Monday's match, says that Leicester are not the same side that they were 12 months ago and even admitted that the King Power stadium had lost some if it's fear-factor.

The 35-year-old said:"They're not the team they were this time last year. Football is about confidence.

"It was always going to be tough for them to repeat what they achieved last year. It was once-in-a-lifetime what they achieved.

"They have bounced back in the Champions League but their league form is just not where it was last year - but you can't forget what they did.

"We knew if we were on our game and defended well we could get the three points.

"Everyone in football would know it's a different place to last year, you can tell from the fans, they were pretty quiet. That is football and how it changes."

The Foxes now face a crucial home meeting with West Ham on New Years Eve and will be hoping to end the year on a high, as the next round offixtures marks the halfway point in the Premier League campaign.
