Garth Crooks Says He 'Can't Understand' Jurgen Klopp's Decision to Allow Defender to Leave Liverpool

BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks has criticised Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp for allowing controversial centre-back Mamadou Sakho to join Crystal Palace on loan during the January transfer window.

A dispute between Klopp and Sakho saw the Frenchman frozen out of first-team football at Anfield and having failed to play a single match since the start of the season, the defender joined the Eagles on a six-month loan deal.

It's that time of the week.

Since being welcomed into Sam Allardyce's side, Sakho has made a steady start to life at Selhurst Park and appeared to be back to somewhere near his commanding best during Palace's recent 2-0 win over West Brom.

With Liverpool's defence continuing to flatter to deceive for muchof the season, many have criticised Klopp's failure to address the defensive side of the team and having seen Sakho impress since joining Crystal Palace, Garth Crooks has now questioned the Germans' thinking behind the loan deal.

He toldBBC Sport: "Less than a year ago, Sakho had acquired cult status at Anfield only to be unceremoniously shown the door by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp after a disagreement between the two men.

"Bust-ups between highly-strung characters were common place in my day, so why it should signal the departure of this totally committed defender, I don't understand.

"Nevertheless, what has become surplus to requirements for Liverpool has been warmly greeted (on loan) by Crystal Palace. The defender was magnificent against West Brom."

Reportsemerged on Sunday that Klopp has yet to rule out Sakho's return to Anfield at the end of his loan spell with Crystal Palace, however any final decision is unlikely to be made until the summer as both men concentrate on helping their respective sides in the final few months of the season.
