Gerard Pique Claims Under Pressure Luis Enrique Brought Barcelona 'From S*** to the Treble'

Published on: 20 February 2017

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has leapt to the defence of under-fire manager Luis Enrique by claiming he brought the club from "absolute s***" to winning the treble, according toGoal.

The Spanish champions have endured a difficult campaign, with Enrique's side currently trailing Real Madrid by a point in La Liga - though Real have two games in hand over their main rivals - while Barca were humbled by Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 of the Champions League last week; going down 4-0 in the first leg at the Parc des Princes.

Enrique did however steer Barca to anincredible La Liga, Champions League and Copa del Rey treble in his first season, and the club managed to defend both league and domestic cup trophies last season. And Pique was keen at this time of difficulty to stand up for his current boss, by reflecting on just how far he'd brought them during his reign.

He said:"When Luis Enrique arrived, we came from absolute s*** and we won the treble with him. I would like us to look back and see all the work the coach has done with us.

"It is true that we are not in the best moment. For a month-and-a-half we've not been playing the football that we would like to play. But we are still alive in three competitions."

Barca limped to a 2-1 victory over Leganes at the weekend to close the gap on Real, while they will also feature in this season's Copa del Rey final when they face Alaves. Enrique however has a huge job to do if he is to turn the tie with PSG around, with the French champions in a commanding position going into the second leg.
