Barcelona extended their unbeaten run in La Liga to 22 games and set a new club record as they fought back to draw 1-1 with Espanyol.

Ernesto Valverde's side are yet to lose in La Liga this season and extended their lead at the top of the table to 12 points in the process.

However, Atletico Madrid, who face Valencia later on Sunday, can reduce that to nine points should they win.

Barca started the game against their local rivals with Lionel Messi on the bench and failed to make an early impression despite having Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho in the team.

Messi came on for Paco Alcacer in the 59th minute but was unable to make an instant impact in the driving rain.

Gerard Moreno broke the deadlock in the 66th minute with a close-range header to give Espanyol a shock lead.

But Gerard Pique headed Barca level in the 82nd minute to rescue a point.
