Ghana can still win the AFCON – Anthony Annan

Former Ghana midfielder Anthony Annan is confident the Black Stars can annex the Africa Cup of Nations title that has eluded the country for a longtime.

The West African nation has not won the Africa Cup of Nations since 1982 despite coming close three times, reaching the finals in 1992, 2010 and 2015.

In an interview, the former Hearts of Oak star asserted the country can still clinch the title and is therefore backing the current squad to end the trophy drought.

“The current squad have been in finals before, so I feel there is something to be done for us to win AFCON. We can still win the AFCON, our time has passed, so we just have to pray behind the current team so they can win the trophy for us” he said.

Annan was part of the squad that reached the finals of the 2010 World Cup where Ghana lost the title to Egypt.

He also featured at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where Ghana reached the quarter-finals of the mundial.

The 36-year-old featured for the Black Stars between 2007 and 2013 and proved his worth for the national team.

He scored two goals in 67 appearances for the Black Stars since his debut in 2007.

Annan had spells with Hasaacas and Hearts of Oak before departing for greener pastures.

The midfielder, who is yet to call it a quit had stints with Schalke 04, 1860 Munich, Osasuna, Beitar Jerusalem and others.
