Harry Redknapp has revealed his surprise at the performances of Liverpool's top scorer and stand-in left back James Milner.

The retired England international has shone in his new role, having replaced the unreliable Alberto Moreno in the position after the 4-3 win at the Emirates, in which the Spaniard was singled out for his poor defensive display.

And Redknapp singled Milner out for praise speaking on BT Sport(viaSport Review)on Saturday night, admitting that he hadn't anticipated the influence the former Aston Villa player would have in his new position.

James Milner has played left-back and I couldn't see him playing there but he has been excellent," he said.

Redknapp isn't the first pundit to heap praise on Milner; the likes of Robbie Savage and Neil Mellor having already given him credit.

Milner has scored four goals for Liverpool this season, although all of them have come from the penalty spot. He's also earned plaudits for his creativity from full back.Since August 2015, hehas 12 assists and eight goals to his name.

Having signed for Liverpool in 2015 following his release from Manchester City, Milner has made 52 appearances in all competitions for the Reds, and has become one of the most reliable performers at the club.

He suffered a knock to the head in Monday night's stalemate against Manchester United at Anfield, but is expected to be fit for Liverpool's next outing against West Brom on Saturday.

The 30-year-old was replaced by Moreno late in the game but the injury is not believedto be serious.
