Hugo Lloris Blames Champions League Exit on Too Many Mistakes Against Monaco

Published on: 22 November 2016

Tottenham Hotspur exited the Champions League group stages on Tuesday evening and Hugo Lloris believes their slow start contributed to a poor performance in Monaco, according to the Evening Standard.

Spurs needed at least a point to preserve their hopes of qualifying from Group E but two second-half goals from Monaco'sDjibril Sidibe and Thomas Lemar ended the London's side hopes of making the knockout rounds.

Lemar's strike came just 38 seconds after Tottenham striker Harry Kane had equalised via the penalty spot.

The French keeper admitted his side weren't good enough on the night to grab at least a draw and he views their clash against rivals Chelsea at the weekend as the perfect cure for the European hangover.

"We're very disappointed, very frustrated," Lloris said. "We started too slow and sloppy. We didn't deserve to win tonight.

"It's a big disappointment but we need to keep our chin up because we have a big game on Saturday."

The 29-year-old made a number of impressive saves at Stade Louis II, including a stop from the penalty spot to deny former Manchester United striker Radamel Falcao after only 10 minutes.

Lloris's second-half reflex save from Monaco defender Kamil Gilk was the pick of the bunch, tipping a powerful close-range effort over the bar following a free-kick for the hosts.

Tottenhamstill have a chance of qualifying for the next round in the Europa League should they avoid defeat in their final Group E match at home to CSKA Moscow, who they defeated 1-0 in their only victory in the Champions League this campaign.
