Jamie Carragher Reveals Former Captain Personally Asked Steven Gerrard to Sign for Real Madrid

Ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has revealed that former Real Madrid captain Raul tried to lure Steven Gerrard to sign with Los Blancos after Liverpool thumped them 4-0 in 2009.

Carragher, who was Gerrard's team-mate for a number of years, recalls a match against the Spanish giants after which Raul came up to the ex-Reds captain and asked him to come over to Spain to join him.

Thank you, Steven Gerrard, for everything you have given to the world of football. You will never walk alone!!! pic.twitter.com/5yYe0ZxZvH

Speaking ontalkSPORT's Drivetime show, the pundit said:I heard you before talking about Barcelona and I agree to an extent - I don't think he would have been suited to them as he played a different type of game, more all action. He'd have been a lot more suited to Real Madrid.

We beat Real Madrid 4-0 at Anfield and Raul came up and asked if he'd go to Real Madrid in that summer, so that is how strong the feeling was from Real Madrid “ the actual captain asking if he'd sign!

I obviously never wanted him to go, but my advice to Stevie was there is only two clubs you'd go to “ and that's the Spanish giants."

Carragher added that he didn't mind Gerrard going to play abroad and returning, but would have never allowed him back if he'd gone to Chelsea, who came very close to snagging the player some years back.

He added:"My advice [was] if you ever want to take your chance abroad you can always come back, as Ian Rush did when he went to Juventus. But if Stevie ever went to Chelsea he'd never have been allowed back “ I wouldn't have allowed him back!
