Jeremie Frimpong started the game at the BayArena and lasted 85 minutes.

The Werkself were clearly superior, but they could not consistently produce clear-cut opportunities. Although the hosts were in charge of the game, it took the Black and Reds until the 36th minute to start breaking through the strong Freiburg defense.

Florian Wirtz scored in the 36th minute after receiving a pass from Jeremie Frimpong.

The Werkself kept up their impressive play and added another goal just after the hour mark. After a solo run by Wirtz, Hofmann got the ball on the outside of the penalty area, and his shot struck the left upright, the keeper Atubolu's back, and the net in the end.

In the second half, the visitors had their first opportunity, which gave SCF a chance to tie the score. In the 70th minute, Manuel Gulde, the substitute, made it 2-1 with a header from a corner.

Leverkusen will play TSG Hoffenheim in their next league game.
