Joining Brighton from Chelsea was not a risk - Black Stars defender Tariq Lamptey

Ghana defender, Tariq Lamptey says his move from Chelsea to Brighton and Hove Albion was not a risk.

The 21-year-old who was a key player for the Chelsea Academy joined the Seagulls during the January 2020 transfer window after a brief stint with Chelsea’s first team.

Tariq made his first appearance for the Chelsea senior team during a 2019/20 Premier League game against Arsenal at the Emirates under Frank Lampard, a game the Blues won 2-1.

However, the young was a key figure under Graham Potter but seems to have lost his playing position under Roberto de Zerbi.

Quizzed on whether it was a risky decision to join the club, who were only in the English top flight for the third season, the Black Stars defender said there is nothing as ‘risk’ for him.

“I think when you back yourself and you have the foundations that are behind me, they always believe in me and I trust God. With that, I don’t think I really think of anything as risk,” he told Joy Sports.

“It is something that you worked hard for and you believe in yourself and you are ready to take the next step. I was playing week in and week out in senior football. With anything that you do, you have to have trust and belief.”

Tariq has been with the club for the last three-and-half years and played 20 games in the just-ended 2022/23 as the club secured European qualification for the first time in their history.

He is out of Black Stars squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Madagascar later this month due to injury.
