"Tonight was a performance and a result," Mourinho told MUTV, United's official televsion channel. "And I was saying before the match, performance without result is not good but [it] gives you a future.

"But performances with good results is a happy moment, but it is just a happy moment, not a happy future. And today [United] played very well again, with goals," the Portuguese continued, referring to his side's inability to kill of their last three Premier League home matches, against Stoke, Burnley and Arsenal.

"And it is important for us because we always [said] since day one that we want to do well in the Europa League and we were in a position of needing four points, now we need just one," Mourinho concluded.

United require a point when they travel to Ukraine to face Zorya Luhansk in December, but defeat tonight would have seen their qualification hopes disappear.

Mourinho also spoke to theBBCabout the performance of his under-fire captain Wayne Rooney. Rooney opened the scoring on 35 minutes, with a goal that took him ahead of Ruud van Nistelrooy as Manchester United's all-time record European goalscorer, and just onto 248 for the club in all competitions - one behind Bobby Charlton's club record.

"People like [Rooney] don't need to answer [critics]any more, just enjoy a few more years of his career and playing the best he can," Mourinho stated. "That's what he tries to do. More important is the fact we need one point to qualify."
