Klopp plays down van Dijk injury

Published on: 23 September 2018

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp does not think the injury Virgil van Dijk suffered in the second half of Saturday's 3-0 win against Southampton is serious.

The former Saints defender had to be substituted in the 55th minute with a rib injury and was replaced by Joe Gomez.

However, Klopp said afterwards: "He already had a bruise in the ribs before the PSG game, which is very uncomfortable and now he got another hit there.

"It is not cool but should not be too serious. It should be absolutely OK, hopefully. I didn't hear anything different."

The Reds scored all three of their goals against Mark Hughes' team before half time, and Klopp surprised many people by taking Xherdan Shaqiri, who had been outstanding in the opening 45 minutes, off at the break.

Liverpool have won their first six Premier League matches of the campaign and are 15/8 to win the title, while Manchester City are available at 8/11 and Chelsea at 9/1.

Klopp said of his decision to substitute Switzerland international Shaqiri: "We changed the system to bring Shaq in a comfortable position.

"Offensively, it was really good, but defensively we obviously weren't used to it.

"I said to Shaq at half-time that I had never brought a player off after such an influential time without an injury. He is not injured but I wanted to control the game and go back to our normal formation. And that helped, we really controlled it."
