Leighton Baines: Everton can smash this rut

Published on: 23 October 2017

Everton fullback Leighton Baines admits the players are letting themselves and the club down.

However, the veteran insists they can fight back after their home humiliation by Arsenal.

"I did feel going into the game we were going to win it – I believed that," the defender said.

“I was looking forward to the game and believed it was perfect for us. Going a goal in front, it had that feeling, but, unfortunately, it did not turn out that way.

“The obvious way to lift confidence is by finding a way to win again. We have been trying to do that for the past few weeks. Everyone will have an opinion about what we need to do – that is what the game is about.

“I have been in teams that have been on unbelievable runs of form and, with the exact same players, have been in a rut and not been able to string together any results. It is hard sometimes to understand why.

“We have a good group and a good manager and, unfortunately, we are not doing ourselves or the football club justice at the moment."
