Lionel Messi Signs Son Thiago Up to Unconventional Barcelona 'Baby Academy'

Published on: 06 September 2016

You may be forgiven for thinking that the son of Lionel Messi would have footballing blood coursing through his veins.

Sadly, 3-year-old Thiago is not one for kicking a ball around with his five-time Ballon d'Or winning father.

According to Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo, however, Barcelona and Argentina superstar Messi has not given up hope of enticing Thiago to follow in his foot steps to take up the beautiful game.

The report claims that Messi has signed Thiago up to a first-of-its-kind Barcelona baby academy.

Yes, you read that right.

The pilot scheme, known as FCBEscola, is aimed at children between three and five years of age, and will provide a route through to Barca's famed La Masia footballing academy for those deemed good enough to be signed up.

In practice it seems like a sound idea - hoovering up the local talent at such a young age is bound to reap dividends for the Spanish giants.

As one twitter user pointed out, though, these are toddlers after all:

#FCBarcelona have signed Thiago Messi. That's the 3 year-old son of Lionel of course.

And, as is standard practice for twitter, others chose to see the funny side:

I think the signing of Thiago Messi is stupid. Overrated and never proven himself in a good league. Waste of money.

the year is 2036. 19 years ago @hashtagutd joined the football pyramid. now, with Thiago Messi captain, they hold the Champions League.

Here's hoping he lives up to the hype!
