Man Utd Reportedly Planning £35m Raid for Versatile Tottenham Star

Manchester United are reportedly plotting a £35m raid on Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur for key utility player Eric Dier.

The Sun has claimed that Jose Mourinho is eager to bring Dier to Old Trafford, and had considered making a move for the defender during the January transfer window.

However, Spurs gave that idea short shrift and will no doubt expect a hefty fee for the 23-year-old if they considered selling him which, given how vital Dier is to Mauricio Pochettino's men, isn't likely at all.

That hasn't prevented The Sun from quoting a source from within the United camp, however, who believes that the Red Devils are still eyeing up a summer move for Dier.

The source explained: United are interested in Dier, and looked at making a move for him in the January transfer window.

Obviously that didn't come off, but Mourinho has him on a list of targets for the summer. He likes him. Tottenham do not want to sell him under any circumstances, but you never know what can happen when the money is on the table.

Why is Eric Dier being linked to #mufc ? Who's doing this linking ffs, Dier is an awful footballer, shocking actually

Mourinho is rumoured to have a substantial transfer kitty - thought to be around £200m - to play around with this summer in a bid to bolster his first-team squad in the North West of England.

The Portuguese boss is alleged to be chasing a striker, centre back, centre midfielder and a full-back to add tohis ranks once the 2016/17 campaign comes to an end, and Dier's versatility would certainly be a significant plus point to United, due to his ability of playing in a number of positions.

Dier is currently contracted to Spurs until June 2021 and, with the North London club vying for silverware in both domestic and European tournaments in the past two seasons, could decide to reject United if he feels his current employers have just as good a chance as United of securing the Premier League trophy in the coming seasons.

The Tottenham ace joined the Lilywhites from Sporting in a £4m deal back in July 2014 having previously spent the 18 months beforehand on loan at fellow English side Everton - a club he could have joined if the Toffees hadn't walked away from signing him for a cut price fee of around £1m.

Dier, who has been capped 14 times for England's senior national side, has made 121 appearances for Tottenham in all competitions, scoring six goals in the process.
