Manchester United Eye Up Austria Pair David Alaba and Julian Baumgartlinger Ahead of January

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is considering moves for Bayern Munich left-back David Alaba and Bayer Leverkusen's Julian Baumgartlinger, according to theDaily Mirror.

Mourinho has fallen out with previous first-choice left-back Luke Shaw, who came in for criticism from his managerafter being unable to play for United due to injury.

Mourinho has opted for Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian in defence recently, with Shaw's future looking increasingly uncertain.

The arrival of Alaba could spell the end for Shaw, with the Austria international seen as one of the finest players in Europe. The 24-year-old has been scouted by United, while United are also keen to improve their central midfield options in the form of Bayer Leverkusen's midfielder Baumgartlinger.

United reportedly scouted the pair during Austria's matches against the Republic of Ireland and Slovakia, and the Premier League club are unlikely to be deterred by either of the Bundesliga stars' long-term contracts.

The Red Devils have the likes of Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera and Michael Carrick, amongst others, available to them, but Mourinho is eager to sign Baumgartlinger to strengthen his squad.

Out of favour midfielders Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin are set to leave the club, with Schweinsteiger yet to make an appearance this season and Schneiderlin making just three Premier League substitute appearances.

Baumgartlinger only joined Leverkusen in the summer, impressing in spells at Austria Wien and Mainz. The 29-year-old has made seven Bundesliga appearances for Leverkusen so far this season, contributing one assist, while Alaba has made 10 league appearances, picking up three assists, with Bayern currently secondin the league.
