Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has showered praise on youngster Kobbie Mainoo after inspiring club to triumph over Manchester City in the FA Cup.

Mainoo was pivotal when the Red Devils secured a remarkable 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final on Saturday afternoon.

The 19-year-old midfielder, who played the full 90 minutes, was instrumental in United's triumph.

The Red Devils took the lead in the first half after a defensive error by Josko Gvardiol allowed Alejandro Garnacho to capitalize and score an easy goal.

Manchester United doubled their advantage at the Wembley Stadium when Bruno Fernandes provided a clever assist to Mainoo, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

Belgian-born Ghanaian winger Jeremy Doku goal was not enough as Manchester City emerged victorious to clinch the title over their rivals.

After the game, Rooney, who is Manchester United’s all-time top scorer hailed the 19-year-old for his exploits in the game.

"The composure he has shown on the ball, for such a young lad, has been excellent.

"It's so good to see a player from the academy coming through and dictating the games for Manchester United.

“He's had some moments where he's struggled, but I think this afternoon he's been absolutely brilliant."

Mainoo has been named in England’s Euro 2024 provisional squad and will be hoping to make the cut for the tournament scheduled for next month in Germany.
