Liverpool legend and departing Los Angeles Galaxy footballer Steven Gerrard has been approached by League One strugglers MK Dons about the possibility of taking over as manager, reportedBBC.

Gerrard is to leave the MLS outfit at the end of his contract, and as yet not decided whether he'll retire from the game or continue on elsewhere when that happens. There has been speculation in recent days that he could return to Anfield in a non-playing role, possibly on Jurgen Klopp's coaching staff, however the MK Dons approach presents a different challenge.

The club parted ways with now former bossKarl Robinson recently, and sit 21st in England's third tier. Former England captain Gerrard has no managerial experience, but the Dons have been known to give young coaches a chance in the past. It's reported that the player is on the shortlist of Donschairman Pete Winkelman.

Gerrardhas said he has "options on and off the pitch" and has also been linked with moves to Newcastle United and Celtic.

However, former boss and current Celtic coach Brendan Rodgers has ruled out making a move for the player, saying recently:There is obviously some speculation. I would never say anything about what we would be doing business wise anyway but I think there is probably a natural focus on him because he is leaving and there is a period now where he can go to a club if he is leaving.

We worked well together in our time at Liverpool and I have brought players here that I worked with before so people see it as a natural progression. But there is nothing in it."
