Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has said his final goodbye to his friend and teammate Christian Atsu in a touching tribute.

The final funeral rites of late Black Stars winger Christian Atsu were held at the forecourt of the State House in Accra today. His one week observation was held on March 4th at the Adjiringanor Astro Turf.

The remains of Christian Atsu arrived in Accra on Sunday night 7:40 p.m. 19 February 2023. The remains were received at the Kotoka International Airport by the family, the Ghana Football Association (GFA), and the Government.

"Christian was one of my favourite players and also one of the guys close to my heart. I am not God but the trust Christian had in me was unbelievable. He always tells me Asa please try and play every game for us cos I don't see us winning without you. Any time he sees me he shakes his head and starts laughing. After every goal I score Christian always walks to me and says Asa nyame nshira wo (God bless you). My heart is in pain for loosing a humble, innocent, and unbelievable footballer like Christian. Thank you for everything. Rest in peace brother," Gyan said.

Atsu played 65 times for Ghana and helped the Black Stars reach the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations final in Equatorial Guinea.

The 31-year-old also played for Premier League sides Everton FC, AFC Bournemouth, and Newcastle United.
