Rockson-Nelson Kwami Etse Dafeamekpor, the NDC Member of Parliament for South Dayi Constituency, has accused former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan of purposefully missing his crucial penalty kick during the 2010 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals against Uruguay.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on TV XYZ, Dafeamekpor claimed that Gyan's missed penalty was not an accident but a deliberate attempt to prevent the then NDC-led government from basking in the glory of Ghana's potential historic achievement in reaching the World Cup semifinals.

Gyan was recently appointed to the 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Flag bearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s Manifesto Sub-Committee on Sports.

According to Dafeamekpor, Gyan's political allegiance to the NPP influenced his decision to sabotage the NDC-led government's potential moment of glory on the world stage. The South Dayi MP insinuated that Gyan deliberately aimed for the crossbar, ensuring Ghana's loss and denying the government the opportunity to capitalize on the euphoria of a historic World Cup achievement.

“He intentionally missed that penalty at the 2010 World Cup because the NDC was in power then. He intentionally missed, for the glory would have come to the NDC. Asamoah Gyan is now part of Dr. Bawumia’s campaign team. There is everything wrong with that," the MP said.

“When you are a national figure like that and you become partisan, then we will begin to read meanings into the things you did against us” the Member of Parliament said," he added.
