New Birmingham boss Redknapp: I took job after 10min meeting

Birmingham City have named Harry Redknapp as new manager.

Gianfranco Zola resigned on Easter Monday following the 2-0 defeat away to Burton Albion, having won two of his 24 games in charge.

The Italian has left Birmingham just three points clear of the relegation zone with three games left to play and former Tottenham boss Redknapp will be tasked with guiding them to safety.

“I got a phone call last night at 7pm from the people of Birmingham," Redknapp told Talksport. “I drove to London and had a 10-15 minute meeting with them and said 'sure I'll come and do it'. My wife said to me 'are you mad or what?'. I get fed up sitting around doing nothing.

“Birmingham are a proper football club but they are in a precarious position. We have the worst goal difference [of the teams still fighting against relegation]. It's a real challenge. I'll come and live up there until the end of the season and if I can keep them up then we can sit down at the end of the year and we can talk about going forward next year and in the future. If they don't stay up then obviously… you know.

“It's not really a risk [for me]. They've won two out of 22. I haven't got a magic wand, I'm not going to turn them into Real Madrid. If I can just get them going and get a bit of belief back into them and we can pick up a win of whatever we need to stay up – that's all I can do."
