New Year’s Resolutions: What Serie A’s top six need in 2019

Published on: 01 January 2019

Juventus – Padding for the trophy cabinet

It’s hard to look at the Old Lady and think there are any gaps that need filling. All over the pitch, from goalkeeper to striker, they are well-stocked with talent.

Serie A isn’t the test for Juventus any more and it could be argued that that’s been the reality for a few years now, but what they need more than anything else is to finally take that next step and lift the Champions League trophy.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s presence rightly raises expectations and anything other than success in Europe would be seen as a season of falling short for Massimiliano Allegri’s side which, while setting the bar high, is praise for the job he has done there during his four-and-a-half years in Turin.

Napoli – Silverware is the only addition needed

It’s hard to work out exactly what Napoli need and given they hit 91 points last season and still didn’t win Serie A, it’s difficult to escape the feeling that they need to put their eggs into other baskets and forget about trying to mount a title challenge.

Champions League elimination was a bitter pill for Carlo Ancelotti to swallow and now they must make a push to win the Europa League.

Whether it’s in Europe or domestically – most probably the Coppa Italia – Napoli will be desperate to add some sort of silverware in the near future and with the title seemingly set to return to Turin again, they should go all-out in the Europa League.

Roma – Something has to give

After the high of reaching last season’s Champions League semi-final, the Giallorossi have had a disastrous 2018/19 season so far.

Eusebio Di Francesco is under immense pressure in the capital and if things don’t improve drastically and fast, he could well be out of a job.

Given the turnover in the summer though, with important figures like Kevin Strootman and Radja Nainggolan being allowed to leave, the problems at the Stadio Olimpico are deeper rooted than the coach and removing Di Francesco would likely just paper over the cracks.

One way or another though, Roma need something to change. Now with back-to-back wins under their belt, they will be hoping to build on that when Serie A returns from its winter break.
