The 28-year-old has quit international football prematurely and has told coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor he is not available for selection again.

As a result, Atsu was omitted from the Black Stars 23-man squad announced by coach CK Akonnor to face Sudan in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations which has been suspended due to coronavirus outbreak.

Atsu feels he has been neglected by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) after suffering an injury while playing for the nation at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations held in Egypt.

According to reports in the local media, Atsu made his intentions known to coach CK Akonnor when he visited him during his European tour in England.

The injury he sustained during the 2019 Afcon cost him his starting spot in the Newcastle United squad as well as his wages and had to rely on his salaries only.

He lost his place to new signing Allan Saint-Maximin.

Christian Atsu made 62 appearances for the Black Stars and scored 10 goals.
