French Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyon has parted ways with veteran defender Jerome Boateng.

The central defender switched to Olympique Lyon for the 2021/22 season.

"Good luck for the rest of your career," the club tweeted, along with a photo of the 2014 world champion.

With the southern French club, the 34-year-old has only had a supporting role. He participated in eight games for Laurent Blanc's team last year. Boateng formerly played for FC Bayern Munich for ten years.

He also played for Hamburger SV, Hertha BSC, and Manchester City for a limited period of time. For the German national team, Boateng participated in 76 international games.

A new destination is not yet known. Boateng had previously declared at the start of the year that he had no plans to retire and only wanted to return to the field in the summer in peak condition.

Jerome Boateng has been linked to a move to MLS or Saudi Arabian League.
