Pellegri: Soon the world will know my name

Monaco’s Italian teenager Pietro Pellegri is not short of confidence ahead of his first full season at the club, declaring that he is ready to take the world by storm this term.

The youngster burst onto the scene in late 2016, becoming the joint-youngest player in Serie A history when debuting for Genoa at the tender age of just 15 years and 280 days.

Snapped up by Monaco in January, Pellegri has drawn comparisons with another teenage talent starring in Ligue 1, but rejected similarities between himself and Paris Saint-Germain’s 2018 World Cup-winning forward, Kylian Mbappe.

“He and I have different roles, he plays wider and I prefer to be more central,” the 17-year-old told RMC Info. “We are both young, but winning a World Cup at his age [19] is huge, and he is an example to follow.

“I hope that this will be my year to shine. I’ve worked hard to get into the right condition and demonstrate my ability, and I hope I will explode and show the world who I am.”

Pellegri netted his maiden goal for Monaco in their 2-1 defeat to Bordeaux on Sunday, becoming the first player born in the 21st Century to score in Ligue 1.
