Players were selected on merit - Black Meteors assistant coach Godwin Attram

In the run-up to the highly anticipated Afcon U-23 tournament, the Black Meteors' assistant coach, Godwin Attram, vehemently defended the team selection, emphasizing that players were chosen solely based on merit.

As the countdown begins, Attram's assertion seeks to quell any doubts and controversy surrounding the squad, setting the stage for fierce competition among Africa's top under-23 football teams.

"Pressure is in football selecting players and whatever is very difficult you will get it but one thing I want to state categorically to everyone in the country is that we plead with them the team we selected from head coach Ibrahim Tanko and his technical men I think is on merit it is on merit," he told Peace FM as monitored by Footballghana.com

"Because when we started the camping it has been almost four months a lot of players have come and if you are in camp and you see the players go and you feel that a player will help the country it is not us it is for the country. We have to choose them so based on selecting the players this is how our technical team with our head coach was able to select the players,"

The Black Meteors will take the young Pharaohs in an international friendly on June 15 and play a second friendly with a yet-to-be-named country before flying to Morocco.

The tournament in Morocco will start on June 24 and end on July 7, 2023.
