Playing under Nigel Pearson at Sunderland one of the best years of my career – Antoine Semenyo

Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo has revealed that playing under Nigel Pearson at Sunderland was one of the best years of his career.

The Bournemouth attacker said Pearson had thought him and refined his ability to carry the ball for distance and shoot.

The 24-year-old featured for Sunderland on loan during the 2019/20 season from Bristol City, a season that turned his career around.

"I had a bit of a cagey start with him. I wasn't really playing much and as a player you're like, 'Why am I not playing?'. He just said your best ability is running and shooting so all you need to do is run and shoot!

"There was a lot of direct football, and I blossomed off that. I played in a front three with Andreas Weimann and Chris Martin and that year was one of the best of my career,” he told Sky Sports.

After the loan, his eight goals and 12 assists led to being named in Ghana's World Cup squad and also a move to Bournemouth in January 2023.
