Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard revealed he was relieved to get off to a winning start after a 2-0 victory over Brighton on Saturday, thanks to late goals from Ollie Watkins and Tyrone Mings.

After leaving Scottish champions Rangers during the international break to replace Dean Smith, Gerrard was taking command of his first Villa encounter.

Former Liverpool midfielder Watkins and Mings scored in the closing six minutes to give Villa its first Premier League victory in six games.

After five straight league defeats, Smith was fired, but Gerrard made an immediate impact as Villa moved four points clear of the relegation zone.

Brighton were comfortable hanging on until the 83rd minute, when Watkins gained possession just inside the Brighton half, dashed into the Albion area, and curled a shot into the far corner.

Mings stole Adam Webster's attempted clearance from a corner five minutes later and shot into the roof of the net to kick-start the Gerrard era.
