PSG Eye Summer Approach for Arsene Wenger as His Arsenal Future Remains Unresolved

Published on: 21 December 2016

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is reportedly the subject of interest from Paris Saint-Germain against a backdrop of growing uncertainty over his future in north London.

Wenger is yet to agree a new contract that would keep him in charge of the Gunners beyond the end of the season and that could be what opens the door for PSG to prise him away.

According to the Sun, the reigning French champions are preparing what will be their third approach for the veteran coach since 2011. And the suggestion from the tabloid is that the club's wealthy owners are confident that this time they will be successful.

Wenger is thought to have twice rejected PSG in the past to stay loyal to Arsenal, a club he has totally transformed in the 20 years since he took the job.

The Sun's claim is that PSG will offer Wenger a £10m annual salary - a £2m rise on what he currently earns with the Gunners - and would back him with substantial funds in the transfer market.

Despite dominance of domestic French football in recent seasons, success in the Champions League remains the ultimate target at Parc des Princes and it already doesn't look as though current boss Unai Emery will be the man to deliver it.

Emery, who guided Sevilla to a third consecutive Europa League triumph in May, replaced Laurent Blanc in the French capital during the summer and is struggling to even stay on top in France.

PSG trail Nice and Monaco in the Ligue 1 title race and were beaten into second place in their Champions League group by Wenger's Arsenal after drawing half of their six games.

Wenger has been under increasing pressure from disgruntled fans at Arsenal in recent weeks after early season promise has somewhat dissipated. The Gunners have lost two straight games and now sit as many as nine points back from Premier League leaders and title favourites Chelsea.
