Reconstruction of the Ghana Premier League

Published on: 15 March 2018

The most exciting league in the world arguably is the English Premier League. It can boast of all the stars and talents the world has seen and worth talking about. Same for the Spanish La Liga and the German Bundesliga. The past and present stars are household names and known almost everywhere in the world.

Teams like Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid are global brands and it goes a long way to tell how well their leagues are performing. Fans of these teams are willing to pay for a whole season match ticket and sponsors willing to invest just to have their companies associated with such clubs to make profit.

Back home in the Motherland, Ghana, we can only wish for the same or even half of it. Fans have lost interest in going to stadiums to watch matches. As a result, attendance to the stadia keeps reducing as the years go by. Most will rather watch European football on StarTimes.

The fans have the power to make or break the league and as it is the fans don’t seem satisfied with the nature of the league.

The early 2000s saw fierce competition amongst local clubs and the fans could well boast of their support for a club. A Kotoko vs Heart of Oak could be a mere match but the fans fuel the importance of that match.

Remember the May 9th disaster? It was all started by the fans when they were unhappy with a referees decision. Not to say it was a positive but it is to state the extent to which fans affect the beautiful game.

The fans play a major part in the marketing of the league so if the fans are not involved, then what is it really for? The fans should be a major target for matches and in Ghana football as a whole.

Many factors go into modern football and to keep a club running. Many clubs are doing that and on the steady rise. It surely means all hope is not lost and methods can be implemented to improve the GHPL.

Design thinking Ghana hub comes up with a workshop where they focus on building the local fan support base using design thinking created for Ghana football. Registration for attendance is free and the location for the event is in East Legon, CEIBS African Campus.
