Report: Huddersfield Town rival Newcastle United for Ghana defender Abdul Baba Rahman

Published on: 12 July 2017

Huddersfield Town want to make another eye-catching transfer by landing Chelsea's Abdul Baba Rahman, but Newcastle United are keen too.

Time moves fast in modern football. One day countless clubs across the continent are fighting tooth and nail for your signature and, the next, they wouldn’t even afford you a sidewards glance.

Fortunately, it appears that Abdul Baba Rahman’s reputation may have survived a difficult couple of seasons. According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea splashed out an initial £14 million, potentially rising to £21.7 million, for the FC Augsburg left-back in the summer of 2015.

Likened to a pre-superstar Gareth Bale for his rampant bursts of acceleration on the flank, the Ghanaian was viewed as one of the most talented young full-backs in world football.

However, after making just 11 Premier League starts in a disappointing debut campaign which coincided with the reign of Jose Mourinho unravelling in dramatic circumstances, Baba Rahman returned to the Bundesliga on a season-long loan deal with Schalke.

Second chance

Injuries meant he only featured 13 times but, according to GhanaSoccerNet, this has not put off potential suitors. The report claims that newly promoted Huddersfield Town, who have broken their transfer record four times this summer, want to make the 23-year-old their next high profile arrival.

Schalke are reportedly close to signing Baba Rahman on loan for another season but Terriers boss David Wagner, who has made good use of his German contacts since moving to Yorkshire, could scupper the deal.

And this may be yet another blow to Newcastle United. The Mirror claimed recently that The Magpies were interested and GhanaSoccerNet adds that their name is still in the frame.

Manager Rafael Benitez has been left frustrated by the club’s inability to make a mark in the transfer window, Florian Lejeune and Christian Atsu the only new additions as countless targets appear to slip through the club’s net.

And the Spaniard’s mood would not be improved if Huddersfield secure a deal for Baba Rahman.
