REVEALED: Fans Choose a More Deserving Nominee for BBC African Player of the Year Than Yaya Toure

Published on: 16 November 2016

Manchester City midfielder and Ivory Coast legend Yaya Toure has won two of the last three BBC African Footballer of the Year awards. However, when his name appeared on the five-man shortlist for the 2016 accolade, it left more than a few people scratching their heads.

Toure didn't enjoy a particularly notable end to his 2015/16 season with Manchester City, while a conflict between his agent and new bossPep Guardiola also means that he has only played once so far in 2016/17, and not at all since early August.

Sadio Mane, Riyad Mahrez, Andre Ayew and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are all worthy contenders, but surely someone else was more deserving of a nomination than Toure?

Responding to a 90min poll, 21,221 football fans registered their opinion on the subject.

The support for alternative candidates who should have earned the nomination ahead of Toure, who won four successive CAF African Footballer of the Year awards between 2011 and 2014, was actually quite split.

Of those who voted, 19% opted for Roma winger Mohamed Salah. Formerly of Chelsea, the Egyptian international enjoyed a fine season on loan in Serie A last season and has already started the new campaign in dazzling form, with nine goals to his name in 16 appearances.

Narrowly, behind Salah was young Arsenal Alex Iwobiforward with 18%. The Nigerian was largely unknown until breaking into the Gunners first-team in March, and has continued his rise in the latter half of the calendar year as well.

Kelechi Iheanacho, Manchester City's rising star, took 15% of the vote after finishing last season with 14 goals in all competitions. He, like Iwobi, has continued his development since the summer into the new campaign, scoring the decisive goal in the Manchester derby in September.

Kenyan powerhouse Victor Wanyana and tricky DR Congo winger Yannick Bolasie both made high profile moves in the summer to Tottenham and Everton respectively. Wanyama was backed as a nominee more deserving than Toure by 12% of those who voted, while Bolasie received support from 7%.

But of all those who voted, nearly a third (29%) actually felt that any single one of the aforementioned suggestions would be more deserving of consideration in 2016 than Toure.
