REVEALED: Hotel Accommodation Cost Black Stars $1.1m at AFCON 2019

The Minister for Youth, Sports, and Culture, Hon. Isaac Asiamah has revealed today that the government of Ghana spent $1.1 million on the accommodation of the Black Stars throughout their preparations and participation at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

Ghana made another representation at the continental competition this year but failed to break a 37-year old jinx that has denied them the opportunity of lifting a 5th AFCON Title.

The team progressed from their group as leaders ahead of Cameroon but were knocked out at the round of 16 stage by the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia.

Having appeared in Parliament to give an account of the expenditure for the team at the tournament, Sports Minister Isaac Asiamah noted that a staggering $1.1 million was used to cater for the accommodation of the team.

The Black Stars lodged at the Jeber Ali Hotel in the United Arab Emirates for their pre-tournament camping before moving to Ismailia, where they stayed in the luxurious Tulip Forsan Hotel.

According to reports, the players enjoyed a one-man to a room instead of the normal two in a room policy used at past tournaments. It is believed that the new arrangement shot up the accommodation bills and resulted in the Ministry paying $1.1 million.
