REVEALED: Premier League Fans Choose Which Championship Player They'd Most Like to Sign in January

Published on: 25 November 2016

It canoften a gamble when Premier League clubs shop lower down the league ladder, but there is undeniable quality, especially in the Championship, that can become useful assets for top flight clubs looking for an extra edge or dimension.

Asked in a 90min pollto name a current second tier star they would like to see their club sign this winter,5,816 fans registered their opinionand there was one clear winner.

Newcastle forward Dwight Gayle took almost half the total vote with 49% saying they would like to see the Magpies star join their club when the January transfer window opens.

Gayle only moved to Newcastle in the summer following the club's relegation from the Premier League and his form is one of the main reasons why Rafa Benitez's team lead the Championship and already look destined forpromotion.

The 26-year-old leads the division's scoring charts with 13 goals to his name so far. What's more, he's shown in the past with Crystal Palace that he does have Premier League quality, so his new found confidence combined with his ability could make him a very good signing.

That is, if Newcastle were willing to compromise their promotion charge by letting him go. Only a truly astronomical offer might tempt the Magpies to bid farewell tothe £10m manso soon.

A more attainable Premier League target might be Leeds midfielder Ronaldo Vieira. Born in Guinea-Bissau but raised in Portugal, Vieira was the choice for 18% of those who voted and has been one of the Championship's breakout stars this season, the type of which Leeds keep producing. Think Alex Mowatt, departed pair Sam Byram and Lewis Cook and others.

Next was Nottingham Forest forward Britt Assombalonga with 11%. The former Peterborough star is hitting his stride again after serious injury ensured his 2015/16 was a write-off and has scored six times in only four Championship starts this season.

He had narrowly more support than Brighton winger Anthony Knockaert's 10%. The Frenchman was central to Leicester's promotion charge in 2013/14, more so than Riyad Mahrez who was new to English football at the time, and has been in fine form as the Seagulls challenge for placesnear the top of the table once more.

Only 8% of Premier League fans who voted want to see £15m Aston Villa striker Jonathan Kodjia join their club in January, while just 4% opted for QPR midfielder Tjaronn Chery.
