REVEALED: Why 2021/2022 Ghana Premier League is starting without a headline sponsor

Published on: 28 October 2021

The 2021/2022 Ghana Premier League season is kicking off this weekend with the first match set to be played between Accra Lions and Elmina Sharks.

Sadly, the new league season is starting once again without a headline sponsor.

As can be recalled, it has been a very long time the Ghana Football Association (GFA) had a headline sponsor for the top-flight or Division One League.

Especially last season where Hearts of Oak was crowned champions of the league after an exciting campaign, the football community bemoaned the lack of a headline sponsor as the clubs remained without enough financing.

Although the Ghana FA had assured that there will be a headline sponsor for the upcoming football season, it now appears it will not happen.

On Tuesday when the 2021/2022 Ghana Premier League season was launched, there was no mention of a headline sponsor giving the indication that clubs will be competing in same poor conditions.

According to Marketing Manager of the Ghana FA, Jamil Maraby, no agreement as been reached with a firm to be a headline sponsor for the Premier League because the outfit does not want to undervalue the product.

Speaking to Joy FM, he has disclosed that the FA is looking at a deal that will not be less than a million dollars.

“We don’t want to undervalue the Ghana Premier League. That’s the reason we are not accepting any headline sponsorship of less than $1 million,” he said.

Checks have revealed that discussions are ongoing with some firms and a deal for a headline sponsor for the Ghana Premier League should not be ruled out this season.
