Sky Blues hand De Jong marquee deal

Sydney FC have unveiled Siem De Jong as their second marquee player, on a loan deal from Ajax.

The 29-year-old attacker joins the Sky Blues' rebuild under new coach Steve Corica.

Since replacing Graham Arnold in the job, Corica has seen stars Bobo and Adrian Mierzejewski leave and has been on the hunt for a top-class overseas signing.

Corica turned to the six-cap Holland international, who won the Eredivisie title four times with Ajax.

De Jong spent the first seven years of his career with the Dutch side, before moving to Newcastle United.

He said: "I see a lot of similarities between Sydney FC and Ajax, they're both leaders in their league with a reputation for silverware and I want to uphold that here.

"I want nothing more than success and I'll help the squad in any way to achieve our goals of winning all of the trophies we compete for this season."

Sydney FC won the FFA Cup last year and retained the Premier's Plate, but lost out in the finals as Melbourne Victory prevented them claiming back-to-back championships.

Their disappointment was compounded by the exits of Golden Boot winner Bobo and Mierzejewski, who had just collected the Johnny Warren Medal as the A-League's player of the year.

Corica, who says he has looked at over 450 players in the off-season as he reshapes the squad, signed former Reading striker Adam le Fondre last week.

De Jong is the fourth visa player at the Sky Blues, whose other marquee is former Johnny Warren medallist Milos Ninkovic.

The Dutchman will unite with compatriot and centre-back Jop van der Linden who joined the club earlier this month.

The Sky Blues are 6/4 to win their first game of the A-League season against Adelaide United, who are 17/10, with the draw 12/5.
