Stuttgart hire former Leverkusen boss Tayfun Korkut as head coach

Tayfun Korkut has landed a new job with Stuttgart.

Stuttgart hired Tayfun Korkut as coach on Monday to replace Hannes Wolf, who led the side to Bundesliga promotion last season.

The club said the 43-year-old Korkut, a Stuttgart native, is getting a contract to summer 2019. He will take charge of his first training session on Tuesday.

Stuttgart sacked Wolf on Sunday, a day after the side lost at home to Schalke 2-0. It was Stuttgart's sixth loss in seven Bundesliga games and left the side just three points above the relegation zone.

Wolf, 36, led Stuttgart to promotion as second-division champion last season. He had been in charge since September 2016.

Korkut's record isn't particularly encouraging for Stuttgart fans. He was in charge of Bayer Leverkusen last season, when the side finished closer to relegation than the European places. Leverkusen are currently second under his predecessor.

Korkut previously had unimpressive spells in charge of Kaiserslautern (six defeats and seven draws in 17 league games) and Hannover (21 defeats, 11 draws in 46).

A former Turkey international, Korkut played as a midfielder for the Stuttgarter Kickers, Fenerbahce, Real Sociedad and Espanyol in Spain, before returning to Turkey for spells at Besiktas and Genclerbirligi.
