Zimbabwe head coach Sunday Chidzambwa has resigned from his position, according to reports in Zimbabwe.
The reports say the 67-year-old tendered in his resignation to Zifa this afternoon with less than a week before the national team play Mauritius in the Chan Qualifiers.
Chidzambwa took the morning training session with players called into camp on Wednesday but did not speak to reporters.
He later issued a statement announcing his immediate resignation but offered no reasons for his decision.
“This letter serves to notify you of my decision to resign from the position of coach of the Zimbabwe men’s national football team with immediate effect… I wish to convey my profound gratitude to the association for the time that I have served as the national team coach,” Chidzambwa said in the letter addressed to ZIFA president Felton Kamambo.
Chidzambwa who was appointed as coach of the Warriors in December 2017 has been under pressure from fans calling for his dismissal.
Zimbabwe were eliminated in the group stages of the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations causing an uproar among fans back home.
He had led the team to the finals, finishing as group leaders in the qualifiers and also won the Cosafa Cup in 2018 and in 2017 as an interim coach.
Meanwhile, Zifa are yet to make a statement on the issue and confirm the new coach who will guide the Warriors during the Chan qualifiers.
