Sunderland Defenders' Good Form Sparks Concerns Over African Cup of Nations Call Up

Sunderland seem tohave arrested their early season slumprecently, thanks in part to thediscovery ofdefensive partnership Lamine Kone and Papy Djilobodji.

However, the two's impressive displays over recent weeks could see them both earn a call up from their national sides for the upcoming African Cup of Nationsin January.

While, 28-year-old Djilobodji hasn't represented Senegal for two years, the defender's performances could see him recalled for tournament in Gabon, next month.

The idea of losing Kone and Djilobodji to the African Cup of Nations and being left with 35-year-old John O'Shea isn't encouraging....

David Moyes' side have won three of their previous five games, and their summer signing from Chelsea has proved pivotal in their impressive form.

While Moyes' had already come to terms with the fact Lamine Kone is an essentialpart of the Ivory Coast side that has qualified for tournament, the surprise emergence of £8m Djilobodji leaves the Scotsman short of options at the back.

Kone was the result of various bids from Everton over the summer and many questioned the 26-year-old's desire to play for Sunderland. However, his recent performances prove he's ready to fight for the Sunderland cause.

One piece of good news for the Black Catsis that striker Victor Anichebe will not be missing January.

Although Nigeria may love to call up the former Everton and West Brom man, their failure to qualify for the tournamentresults in Sunderland not having to let their in form attacker leave for a key chunk of the season.

All three players have been in outstanding formfor Sunderland in recent weeks and are expected to start this weekend. A win in their game against Swansea will see the Mackems climb out of the relegation zone for the first time this season.
