A global survey - reported bythe Daily Mail- has revealed that the average wage of a player in the Premier League now sits at £2.4m-a-year.

That equates to almost £500k a week and is close todouble that of the average of the second highest paying league,La Liga.

Serie A and the Bundesliga sit in third and fourth place respectively, but the English top flight is way out in front, emphasising the huge investment that has been made in the Premier League in recent seasons.

Manchester United top the average wage bill of not just the Premier League, but world football, edging out Spanish championsBarcelona.

The Red Devils spend a reported £5.77m a year on average, while the Catalan clubpay £5.65m a year.

Perhaps surprisingly, given they boast the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale in their ranks, Real Madrid are behind Manchester City in fourth place.

Having said that, Spain's top division doesn't boast TV deals worth £5.1bn, the figure Sky and BT are set to pay between them over the next three years.

That doesn't include foreign broadcasters who are likely to contribute around £3bn, as well as the money generated by programmes like Match of the Day. The Premier League's earning are around £3bn a year, most of which will go to the 20 clubs.

That financial muscle was flexed in the summer, with not far off £1.2bn spent in total by Premier League teams, Manchester United leading the way spending £145m.

As far as individual's wages go, however, the Premier League has only three players in the world's top ten, all three of Manchester United.Paul Pogba, Wanye Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic make the list of prestigious names that also includes the likes of Graziano Pelle and Hulk.
