The 18-year-old has agreed a four-year deal to stay at Old Trafford beyond the end of the season when his current deal expires.

Jose Mourinho has kept the teenager in his first-team plans instead of loaning him out after being impressed with him during pre-season.

Fosu-Mensah has played in the Capital One Cup and the Europa League so far – and Mourinho is expecting to use him as United fight on four fronts.

He will get a pay-rise to £25,000-a-week to commit his future to United after breaking through to the first team under Louis van Gaal.

LVG handed him his debut last February in victory over Arsenal and getting his contract sorted was on the agenda after making the move to the first-team dressing room at the club’s Carrington HQ.
