TOTAL AFCON U17: Fabin guides Uganda to heavy win over Tanzania

Ghanaian trainer Paa Kwesi Fabin guided Uganda to record their first win in the ongoing Total AFCON U17 with a heavy win over hosts Tanzania.

The hosts have been kicked out of the competition following the defeat to Fabin’s boys.

A 16th minute strike from Andrew Kawooya opened the scoring for the hungry Ugandan side that lost their opener to Angola by a lone goal.

Two minutes to the half hour mark, Ivan Asaba unleashed a powerful drive which could not be saved by Hassan Kingwaga to increase the lead for Uganda.

Fabin and his boys guided the lead until the break.

Tanzania breath some determination into their play after the break but Najib Yiga poured cold water on their hopes with a brilliant header to leave the final score 3-0.

The win has restored Uganda’s hopes of making it to the World Cup with their last group game against Nigeria up for grabs.

Fabin and his boys will have to beat the Eaglets of Nigeria to secure semi-final qualification as well as picking a ticket for the World Cup.

Fabin’s side was pipped by Angola in their opening clash of the U17 AFCON on Sunday.

Despite having less than a month to prepare the team for the tournament, the former Ghana U17 trainer has shaped the Ugandan side and they were unlucky to have lost to Angola, proving a huge point against hosts Tanzania on Wednesday.

The former Asante Kotoko trainer was appointed last month as the head coach of the Uganda U17 side and tasked with doing well at the tournament and building a future U20 side.

Fabin played a series of friendly matches including a goalless clash with Kenya U20 side and a 4-4 stalemate with Gor Mahia U20 side before wrapping it up with a 2-1 win over KCC U20 side.

Uganda will face Nigeria, who beat Tanzania 5-4 and won 1-0 over Angola to top the group, in the final group game of the tournament.
